What is the most frustrating thing for you when walking your dog in summer?Your hands are sweaty. Your dog suddenly sees a cat and runs fast. The leash slips out of your hand… and you have to run after him like a fool. Or after every walk, the leash smells terrible – like sweat, dog saliva, and dirty water mixed together.
Don't Think Nylon Leashes Are Perfect
Nylon leashes are strong, light, and cheap. They work fine in normal weather. But in summer, their problems show up.
The surface is too smooth. When your hands get sweaty, holding the leash feels like holding a wet fish. And the smell is worse. Nylon is woven. Sweat and dirty water get inside and you cannot wash them out completely. The smell is like a three-year-old rag. After long sun exposure, the leash fades and becomes hard.
So my advice: if you have a small, calm dog and you take short walks, a nylon leash with a non-slip handle cover might still work. Otherwise, try other materials for summer.
TPU/PVC Coated Leash: A Great Choice for Anti-slip & Anti-odor
This kind of leash has become popular in the last two years. It is a normal webbing covered with a layer of rubber. I tried a TPU leash. The biggest feeling: it is very secure to hold. Even when my hands are sweaty, it does not slip. And it is waterproof. If it gets dirty, just wipe it with a wet cloth. It does not absorb smells. I smelled the leash after using it for a week – almost no odor.
TPU is softer and more eco-friendly than PVC, but also more expensive. If you are on a budget, PVC is fine. This material is great for active dogs or large dogs that need to go out every day in summer.
Silicone Leash: Soft and Great for Sensitive Dogs
If your dog has sensitive skin, or you want the best feeling in your hand, try a silicone leash. Food-grade silicone is non-toxic and odorless. It feels soft and has a good grip – not slippery at all. Silicone does not absorb water. If you take your dog to the beach or walk in the rain, the leash will not become heavy and wet. When it gets dirty, just rinse it under water.
Biothane Coated Leash: Expensive but Really Good
The name Biothane sounds fancy. It is actually a polyester core with a PVC coating. Its biggest advantage is that it lasts a long time and never smells bad. Rain, mud, sea water – none of it hurts the leash. The metal clip usually rotates 360 degrees, so the leash does not get tangled. If you have enough budget and you often take your dog hiking, to the beach, or camping, Biothane is worth the money.
